Rainbow Yorkies

Some of you already know I have now aquired two Yorkie Puppies, little terrors,and the light of my life... but more on them later.
These two are not mine, however one is related to mine.

I took this photo a while ago before even contemplating I would have two of my own one day.

These little guys are part of my Rainbow Series.

My own Yorkies, Pebbles and Bam Bam, will be featured later, maybe when they hold still long eneough to get a good shot.. Ha!

Recently here in Texas, we experienced the worst wildfire disaster in history.Many people lost everything.

This painting is born completely from the raw feelings and aftermath of this tragedy.
As an Australian, I am not new to wildfires, and have to say for something so terrifying in the moment, as a lowly artist I felt I had to record the beauty and awe of NATURE in all her glory.
This is a 24 x 48" oil, on gallery wrap canvas.

It will be on display in The Group of Four Show at the Round Rock Artspace during from November 30th through the month of December.

This trail was behind the asylum which housed Van Gogh for many months while he was so ill.
He is said to have painted in the immediate area and I like to think this was a pathway he traversed often, hence I imagine I have "painted in his footsteps".

Passage of Time

I had the best title for this one while I was painting it, now it's completely gone from my head.Grrr!

The cactus was one I took photos of at a friend's ranch last year, the chasm is completely made up.I just love color and the high horizon theme, however it does make one think about resolving the lower two thirds of the painting ..

To assist my thinking, I took step by step photos of this while I painted it, maybe I will post them in time. It would certainly show you all what a metamophosis it went through.

I think it very healthy as artists to see our work change in the process, this one was compositionally just not working for me, and seeing it on my computer in the various stages, helped a bunch.

Cinque Terre (meaning five lands) on the Southern coast of the Italian Riviera. It's a wonderful place, full of great subject matter for both the photographer and artist alike.

I loved the way the light hit these geese. I used a composit of my own photos taken while I sat beside a lake in Australia.
They are so forceful, quite obnoxious actually. But mainly just curious I guess, wanting food from every person sitting and enjoying the scenery..

Again, the background gave me some pause for thought on this one, and there is more of it to deal with than my chickens.

I wanted to try and keep my colors very high key for the most part, not easy for me, I love the drama of 'punchy' colors.

I also wanted to keep to a limited palette.
The scene is a little made up, a little from a photo I had of a place in Australia, no idea where though.

I am really enjoying oils for a change, but I so want to get back to my large canvasses! Sigh!

Tropical Fruit Salad

I had these 4 x 12" gallery wraps, and decided to use one for this little tropical painting .

Although I have painted on these lovely horizontal or vertical formats before, they have always been large ..More like 12 x 48" or similar.

This was fun, although I found it a challenge to paint this small image, somehow a square is better for me? . My last post was 6 x 12" and that too felt awkward for me, however I do feel it is a good thing to change it up sometimes. Get away from the norm. What do you think?

Vantage Point, Lago Vista

This little oil painting on canvas began as a plein air painting. I was with the Austin Plein Air Group and we took off to paint parts of Lago Vista one hot morning. I recall the day got awfully hot, and I finished early as a result.
Reminds me why I do not enjoy plein air painting that much especially our summer months here in Texas. Brutal !

Timeless Hideaway

This scene was just outside of Branson, Missouri.

I stumbled on the area while taking photos just off the main road. Just goes to show, some gems for photographers and artists are often well hidden out of sight.

I was thrilled to get some great shots of these reflections, and although I painted a very large acrylic of this area a few years back (it was 36" x 48"), this one was a greater challenge for me to fit the desired info into such a small format, this one is 8" x 10" and is in oils.

This is the pathway which leads to the asylum Van Gogh was in.. it is just out of Saint Remy in Provence.
One feels awed and at least in my case, quite overcome when visiting this place. Just to know that Van Gogh was here, that he saw the same gardens, walked the same paths, was truly overwhelming for me.
I chose to paint this in the Provence blues again, it somehow fitted the mood of the place.

I did this a while ago, from a photo I took of a little girl at the Round Rock Chalk Walk. It was a scorching hot day and these kids (and adults) were all doing wonderful chalk paintings on the street.

I just loved the dreadlocks this little girl had.

Had to give her credit though, to wear that jean jacket in 100 degree (plus) heat and sitting on the street as well!!!

This Heat is Killing Me!

This poor woman in St Remy France was obviously done in, waiting for transport in the heat.

We in Texas can certainly empathize.

22 straight days of triple digit heat, phew!!

Anyway, this little painting seemed appropriate for me to do today. Loved the strap off the shoulder.

Coast Road

We have all seen this type of road somewhere, however this is made up.. It is so typical of an Aussie cliff road, and I recalled Big Sur as well while painting this one, even though this is far more sedate than Big Sur.

I did this last night in front of the TV, goes to show, nothing much to watch on TV lately..Ha!!

Curtain Call

This was the other pastel demo I did for the Senior Center at Round Rock. I did work on it back in my studio and finished it today.

As you might notice from prior florals I have posted, I LOVE the red with orange over it, the paintings just glow!

I did most of this at the demo, I had not done the lower one third of the painting to any great degree, and that is what I just finished today.

I hope you like it, and thanks again Baca Center folk for having me there, it was a great few hours even though I was still a little fuzzy headed from this cold of mine.. Grr!

Close up the painting..I decided to crop some of the main painting so you will see the way pastels can be used as a veiling technique. They are an opaque medium, however, if one uses a lighter pressure this veiling effect is glorious! Try it.

High Tide

This was one of the demos I did last Friday for the Senior Center in Round Rock. I had a bit of time after my first demo, so voila as they say in France..

They were an enthusiastic crowd, lots of feedback which was very nice, thanks guys!

Oh I did come home and work on this a bit as well, I never finish a demo usually, and sometimes I never touch them again, but this one just screamed "finish me!"

Villa Patio, France

Here is a preliminary pastel I did one morning, while the others were in town sketching and painting. I was starting to get my cold at this time, and thought I would stay home, get some rest.

Anyway, this is how I did that, a relaxing morning pasteling. Very enjoyable.

This house was set out so that the main house (with three large bedrooms suites and 4 bathrooms) was seperated from this walkway to two other bedrooms and two bathrooms, very private.

The whole layout was extremely private for all 9 of us staying there, we all met in the kitchen every morning and in the evening we would congregate in the living room, for cocktails and just good fun! Of course our days were spent running around, we crammed a lot of painting and sightseeing into the 2.5 weeks we had there.

A wonderful time was had by all, even by the sickly ones like me.. ;(

French Lady

The garden at our villa was absolutely full of roses, they were wonderful! And this was one of the blooms.

I love (as you may know by now) to break the background into shapes, simplify them, so the actual leaves (as they were in this painting) become geometric shapes, to play against the organic pink rose.

Old Fishing Boat, Cassis France

Cassis is a wonderful place for any artist, I love boats and reflections, so you can rely on the fact that these will be a feature on my blog in the near future.

This is another pastel on velour suede board.

Actually one of the ladies had a great idea when we were carting our pastels, shoved in our suitcases for the plane trip back home.

We took some of the plastic clear bags one displays prints in and other artwork, usually not pastels and used them to protect our clothes etc from the pastel dust.

They work for the transporting of the pastel, I would not recommend it as a way to store them in general though, at least not with velour or suede paper. The bags get a lot of the pastel image on the inside of them.

Still it worked marvelously for the transporting home on the plane, and for the most part, the pastels paintings were all fine, thanks Char.

I actually did not take this photo, I was exploring the Wet Canvas site and found it in the reference photos. I had a very small scrap of paper one night and decided to sketch it out, another pastel on velour paper.

White Cliffs, Cassis France

This was done for memory, after a day at Cassis on the coast in France. This place is full of tourists, restaurants, boats and great charm .. a wonderful day trip for our nine artists.

We took our two cars, and traveled about 2 hours south on great tollroads . It was a long and very happy day for us all, although my cold was starting and Vicki's was well under way.

While in Cassis we took a boat trip around the five coves which are simply breathtaking to see.
These high white cliffs are all round each cove, the water is crystal clear torquoise and each cove was just wonderful.

My camera stopped working, very frustrating when I saw so many paintings in front of me, but when I got back to the villa, I did this one from my memory, it turned out to be very close to the real thing.

Guess the old brain worked after all, not too addled with red wine and my pending cold. hee hee.
By the way, my camera is fine, the card was full, goodness me Rae!! What next???

Eygalieres, France

Well here I am at last. I feel almost well again after my France art trip. It's been 7 weeks of this 'BUG' and it sure knocked me for a loop!

So here is the first of my French paintings.

The town in which we stayed (our villa was very nearby) was gorgeous. Charm personified.

I love the tell tale blue shutters in Provence, unlike Italy the colors in France are so much more sedate.

This building was in Eygalieres, an ancient medieval town which is now a tourist draw but still very charming, full of tiny little stores, great bakery and restaurants, we all had a ball everytime we went into town and got to know the locals very well, especially the bakery! :)

Hi everyone, well I am back from France and our group show for the Group of Five in Georgetown here in Texas is up, thanks to three members of the group who hung my works and Vicki's while we were having croissants in Provence. (More on France later) ..

Unfortunately I caught a terrible cold over there and as a result I am still pretty weak, so did not make the opening to this show last Friday night. Here is Vicki standing between two of my paintings.

I will get more photos of the whole show on the blog very soon, when I myself can go and view it, I have heard we had some positive responses on the works, so if you can go along and see the show, it will be up for the month of June at Georgetown Library, Mezzanine level.

The other artists in the show are Vicki Brevell, Nancy Brown, Sue Nosler Gray and Susan Abston Wiley.

Can't See The Forest For The Trees

I am still not sure I have finished this one, but I am going to post it anyway, get feedback.

It has gone through many changes. What was in my head is partly portrayed, but it changed along the way of course, we artists know how that goes. I did not have any trees to fit what I had in mind in my archives, so I made it up.

I love David Voigt's work, an Aussie artist who while I lived in Oz back in the late 90's, was doing sectional landscapes, divided with geometry.

I also did this for a long while in my watercolors, Rae's way of course, but he was the master I emulated. He also went to my college a few years before I did. Neat huh?

My tree painting was also an attempt to try this technique again, and it sure made me crazy with so many verticals. A semi abstraction if you will, not quite a full blown one though.

The difficult part is knowing when to stop adding and subtracting parts, one could go on and on, and as I said, this make the poor artist (ME) crazy!

So here is it in all it's glory, I would love comments please.

My husband once asked me "why do you do waterfalls all the time?"..

Well as you can see with my past posts, I don't all the time, however they are in my heart as is all water. Must be pretty waterlogged I guess, all that Aussie sun and surf! Not to mention my 12 years on Maui!

This one began with an abstract underlay, in fact I will post the steps after this post, just so you might see the process of the painting.

I never quite know how these will turn out, a little nervewracking, but fun just the same, makes the old heart get anxious at times. Ha ha.

Escarpment began with a high horizon point in my mind, .I had this wonderful long canvas, and thought is lent itself to a very dramatic painting.
The colors, the scene, mainly out of my head, and as the painting developed, it took over my thought process, a truly ZEN feeling.

These two sections are top and bottom close ups.

I use a veiling technique over colors, to settle areas back and make only the edges of the cliff the important focus.

Life's A Parade

I did this one last night while watching TV.. I chose a deep burgandy suede board for the substrate, against the orange flowers the contrast worked quite damatically for me. One thing I have to work on when there is as dark a surface as this, is to really push the lights, sort of make them 'shout' at the viewer. Hope you like.

Fashion Forward Picker

I have done several of these 'Picker' paintings, a couple in pastel, and a couple in acrylics, but I just loved the stance of the men in my photos and the grape leaves.

I pretty well made up the background on this, and the red jeans and the warm colors, in actual fact they were all in blue hues in my photos. Once again I tweaked all the colors in Photoshop, it helps me see the wild alternatives.

It was fun to do, but I am still not overly thrilled with this painting.. Maybe another attempt is on the horizon.

I loved doing this one, although I did finish it sometime ago, it's still fresh in my mind . The colors kept me happy and the fernery kept me on my toes, a little like a tangled ball of wool to work out.

The Actual Window

So now you can see the finished product, we consulted on the colors, and as the clients wanted the blues and grays, I suggested that the orange tones would be a great compliment.

To explain the 'connection' I mentioned earlier, all the white areas are actually white glass, every piece had to join with another piece, and lead piping was placed on all the edges.

This window lives happily here in Austin, maybe one day you will walk under it and say, "oh, I regognize that. I know the artist!"

Horse design for stained glass SOLD!

Although this was done a few years ago, I thought you might like to see the progression of this piece.

I was asked to do designs for a stained galss company and amongst other subjects, horses of course were a popular choice for clients.

This piece was designed completely in Photoshop, yes, drawing it and colors included. I use a tablet to draw my designs, with a pen tool, it is so much easier to get total exactness, and this stained glass company needed me to connect each seperate piece of the glass, nothing was to be left hanging like a thread. It was like a huge jigsaw and a was a great challenge.

The design was for a huge transom window measuring 6 foot by 5 foot and the clients had not at this time picked the colors they prefered, so I did a more tonal version for them to see.

Whiter Shade of Pale

Okay, I know I have done one so similar to this with a golden horse and a blue bucket..see an earlier post for that one.

This is not actually from my own photo, my other one was.

However when I saw this shot on Wet Canvas's photo reference archive, I had to paint it.

I did change a few little things, like the color of the bucket and I made the fence come across the horse at the top for design purposes, but essentially I could not show this one in a competition, because it is from another person's photo... oh well..

I still loved doing it.

It is on that rich burgundy suede matboard again, love the stuff, have only one small piece left in that color :(

I love chickens, they are so comical and very proud, at least the roosters. Why would'nt they though, when you see those colors in their feathers, wonderful.

I went to Austin zoo to get these photos, made a composit from which to work.

I had a nice piece of rich burgandy suede matboard, and thought the oranges would look great on it.

Hazel's version of the painting below

As promised this is Hazel's version of the same scene, she did it in oils, and it is simply wonderful. I think it's around 11 x 14", so larger than my effort, and she used a lot more of the orange earth colors, lovely I think.

My version looks more MOODY I think, almost a different time of day. As I said before I only realized that this was the same scene after I had almost finished my own painting of it. Hillarious, that's old age for you huh?

Australia Revisited 3

Gum trees in Australia have such a gleem to them, when the sun hits them it's magic.

This is from a photo I found in my aunt's ichives, and while halfway through painting this while I watched my favorite telivision programs, I realized I had seen something like this in Hazel's work?

I looked at the book I did on her a year or so ago, and voila, she has also done an image of the same scene.

I am posting both on the blog, so you can compare. I am amazed I did not realize my overlap sooner, I did that with another of her painting choices too, guess she was my mentor after all, and I certainly like the same scenes she used to paint.

But all that aside, this is my painting, warts and all.

Australian Escape

I definitely get homesick at Christmas, hence all these Aussie scenes, forgive me if it's overkill.

This was from a photo I took two years ago while I was there, no idea where it was, but let's say it's a typical Aussie scene and of course having reflections and the lovely receding back line, I could not resist painting it. You know me and water.

I chose a deep rich purple suede mat board for this one, as I was dealing with so many shades of rich greens and I wanted the painting to 'pop'.

I will often choose the complimentary color of the overall local colors I am to use.

I was lucky enough to find a lovely piece of lavender blue suede matboard at a framers the other day. He GAVE me a few off cuts, wonderful!

I had this photo Australia, who knows where (I can't recall) it could be any number of wonderful Aussie scenes I visited.

The light in my home country Down Under is amazing, clear and bright, especially close to the center of Australia. I thought these colors would look great on this blue suede paper, what do you think? You can see touches of this original color matboard in the central band of this painting.

Of course the gumtrees always look wonderful over there, so many soft grays and mauves, to bounce warm colors off, for an artist this a great thing.

How I miss my wonderful country at times, doing an Australiana painting occasionally helps my homesicknessness :)

Who's There ?

I just completed this one today, the cat is one I took photos of in Ajijic, Mexico, she/he was so intent on something in the bushes, I could get some great shots.

I (for the first time) used a velour covered matboard for this one,(which I bought from my framer) a rust color, it worked well for me.

It stayed rigid and (as with nearly all my other pastels on velour), I did not have to spray mount the paper myself, so it has knocked out one step, making room for more painting, always a good thing huh?

Italy Cluster

Italy Cluster was done en plein air, in Italy, on a gorgeous sunny day in the hills of Tuscany. Don't ask me to name the town we were at this day, I did not keep track, they all (and we went to a different place everyday almost) started to run together for me.

It was a painting trip to Italy a year ago, with a group of very special artists, we had a villa for two weeks in Tuscany. It was an amazing vacation, painting everyday, great vino, great food, and the ladies were all such fun.

If anyone has painted en plein air before, they will know one has to be quick, it's a race to get that light all the time.

In my case, it was a race to find shade, get a very quick sketch down and try not to sit in an ant nest :)

So having said that, this is a pastel SKETCH (worked on for around an hour) on a rust colored paper (Art Spectrum) and as color is my thing, it allowed be to be quite bold with a fairly unrealistic palette.

Plein air painting is not a huge 'MUST DO' for me, I like my creature comforts too much I guess, but it is great experience, and makes you think and assess the natural light in a very different way to working from a photograph.

Austin Country Club

What a simply lovely day three of my very dearest art buddies and myself had last week. We all did some plein air painting for a couple of hours then had lunch .

The Austin Country Club is a beautiful club, with a lot of reference for the artist's eye.

I am not that interested in landscapes anymore, having gotten onto a figurative and animal track of late, but this was nice escape, even though I had a fight with the sprinkler system :(

Alaska Gold

These beautiful horses are in the town of Ketchikan Alaska. I knew the title of this painting before I painted this one, the gold of the horses and the fact that Alaska gold is everywhere (tourist trinkets gold that is).

I did this one on velour paper in pastels, and it took an amazing amount of very exact drawing, even for me, who is a drawing fanatic.

I had to do a larger scale of my photo (which I gridded) then transfer it to the paper, and on velour this is very tricky.

Anyway, I finished it, even with this darn tennis elbow, which is very sore again after this painting :(

Incidentally, that is why I have been AWOL, I just had to rest this elbow.
Forgive me. I hope I can get back to producing more paintings very soon.

My Baby

Okay I know this is'nt art, but to me she is a work of art.

This is my macaw Baby, whom some of you already know. I have had her for 19 years now since she was 4 months old.

When I was washing up the other morning Baby wanted to 'bob for dishes', and here is a a shot or two of the grand event which has become a morning ritual of great pleasure for her, not so much for me, but oh well.

Just wanted to share.
