I actually did this one in 10 minutes. It was my strategy to be quick, precise and playful. 

This is a great way to loosen up .

I also have been using the small formats, this one is again a 4,25" x 5,5" Sennelier sanded panel.

Ideal for a quick study.

Bull Creek 1 and 2..Gouache...Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

One of the small gouache paintings I did en plein air yesterday. This is Bull Creek in Austin.

I always tint the surface first with a bright color, to get the 'pop' of freshness to show throughout my image.
This one was a wild magenta.

The painting is done in GOUACHE, my new favorite for plein air painting.

In This Land Of Magical Beasts..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I have done this image before in acrylics, at least a version of it.

My source photo was a composit I made in Sketch Club on my IPad. I love that app. I overlap my images in many layers to get some wonderful shapes.

The hard part is transposing them to my pastel paper.

 In this case, my paper is Sennelier paper which was a bright rust color.
I also splashed the surface with water to get the mottled texture effect I have used in the past. A new practice for me, and one I love obviously. :))



The image is unframed and measures 19.6" x 25.6"

Neptune's Nautilus..Water Media

I was living on Maui at the time of these SHELL and TROPICAL  paintings. I believe this was painted in the early 90's.

I am still very influenced by the nautical elements and tropical themes, as you might have noticed.

This one was published in a couple of books, one in Hawaii and one in Australia.  I also made a poster out of it which sold out.

Again it has the white ink overlays to make panels over the watercolor. The shapes of course are shells, and I used real shells as my reference. The background areas are completely made up.

This image was around 30" x 30" and is SOLD!
