Woodland Display..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This again was a demo I just embellished. It was an exercise on color and the use of complementary opposites on the color wheel. Green on its own can be very overpowering, and although in nature we do see a lot of green, I like to 'jazz' it up with opposite colors, as with this image. The pinks and oranges help offset the green nicely.

                                                        This image is 14" x 14" unframed
                                                                               $175 Plus S/H

This was completed just now in my studio. I started it yesterday in a great mini workshop with Linda Dellandre. She kindly gave our group  (Austin Pastel Society) some wonderful tips on her techniques in pastel painting.

Thank you Linda, we all had a great time!

This painting is a pastel on UArt paper.

Soft Light and Trees..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I finished this one  late yesterday, it is just a small sketch, great fun to do these. I was experimenting with light and doing these small paintings very quickly, this one took around 15 minutes.

Working this fast, one can only go for the necessary elements, and not stay too long on details. A loose and spontaneous image is the result.

I used a little rubbing alcohol over the pastel underlay first. Then proceeded with my pastels once it was dry.

My surface here is Pastel Premier paper, which is a great surface for wet media as well.

This image is 3,5" x 8" unframed
$60 plus S/H

Sandy Trail..Pastel.. Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Just finished this one, experimenting with acrylic inks as a base.. I have no idea what this substrate was, it's not Sennelier or UArt, . I bought a few sheets off a friend who had them for a long while.

I was a little scared to use wet media on this first, however it seemed okay, although I would not want to push it too much, as it began to lift the surface a little.

As I said, totally experimental.

The color was a soft greenish tan to start with and I used very wild pink and ocher colored inks as my base.

The size of this one is 11" x 15" unframed.
$350 Plus S/H

Spring Accents..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Just finished this one after a lovely walk in the greenbelt of Lake Travis yesterday. The colors of spring are everywhere, what a perfect time of the year!

This is an 8" x 10" pastel on a new substrate for me, a MULTIMEDIA BOARD .

I ordered a few of these the other day, and while the jury's still out on it, I am finding it interesting to use.
I began this image with a loose watercolor under painting, then used my pastels over the top.

The surface is not that gritty, so I found I had to be super careful with my pressure applying the pastels.

$125 plus S/H

Bluebonnet Dazzle..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

When I moved to Texas from Maui, I swore I would never paint bluebonnets as they are a constant theme here with artists.

Hmmm. well I guess lied to myself.

These flowers are just so gorgeous when you see a hillside covered in that blanket of mauves and blues, simply spectacular!

They are all popping up here in Austin with this burst of spring weather, and I simply could not ignore them.

Having said that, here is my token BLUEBONNET pastel. It is on a  deep charcoal gray Sennelier sanded paper.

7.5" x 11.5" unframed
$175 plus S/H

Zig Zag Path..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Just completed this on this weekend. I used a lot of the scumbling technique and a little bit of 'dusting' at the end of the process.

The scene is here in Austin, Texas, and to the everyday walker I would think it just looked 'green'..
To me, however, as I love color, I saw turquoise and mauve.. We artists are a strange lot huh?

But I think it great we can look at things through 'rose colored glasses'.

This image is 8" x 11.5" unframed.
$200 plus S/H

Embankment and Shadows..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I just finished this one. I have been cleaning my studio and doing menial house chores for the last two days, ugh! I needed to get back into something I love..

My morning walk passes this scene every day, or at least the trail and the trees.. In Texas the colors are way too green for me, so I embellish a lot.. Had you noticed?

Anyway, here it is, a pastel on Sennelier sanded paper (unframed)
11.5" x 15.5"
$325

Journal Entry 7 (Arizona) Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

While in Sedona Arizona...a few years ago, we visited Jerome, a wonderful town, with 'ALPINE' vibes.
There was a ghost town there and this scene is from that old relic in time. I loved it! Abandoned buildings, chickens, old trucks, even a donkey and a wonderful bearded old gentleman who I think owned the museum...lots and lots to paint!

I would love to go back there. Maybe one day..

Saplings..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I wanted to get the scragginess of the saplings in the light, and used my rigger basically for 2/3's of the process.
It is unframed.

Alaska Dapple..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This pastel is another done on the Colorfix paper. The 'dusting technique' is used at the end of this piece, to get the sparkle.

The scene, mostly made up, although I saw many such scenes in these soft misty colors while on a trip to Alaska a few years ago. The light is so soft there, wonderful to paint.

Double The Trouble..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Some of you might recognize my boys, this is Pebbles and Bam Bam, the loves of my life!

They are from two photos I had and I wanted to place them in water, to try and get a reflection and ACTION image.

I made the water up. It was a fun image to paint, and I am pretty pleased with this one.

This image is 18" x 24" unframed

The substrate is a dark gray Sennelier paper

$500 plus S/H

Cousins..Pastel..Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

COUSINS is another image of Kookaburras..One of Australia's national icons.
I had these photos from years ago, taken at a place called Featherdale which is west of Sydney.

I love this place, one can interact with the animals and get wonderful photos.

These two are both Kookaburras, one is a Blue Winged kookaburra and the other is the more common regular Kookie.

I had two separate shots and joined them into the one photo in Photoshop.

They were actually sitting on a bench where people could pat them, as they are rescue birds, and very used to humans.

I made the background up, to block out all the tourists.

This image is another pastel on velour paper.
9.5" x 10.5" unframed.

This image is SOLD!
