Street Scene Charm.. Watercolor...Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This little scene is from Saint Martin De Vers in France.
I just wandered around the little village and found some lovely little vignettes to paint later in my studio.

Castelnaud, France..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This scene is of Castelnaud in France, a place full of vignettes for the artist to sketch. We visited a great castle here, and saw some random shows put on by the staff in period costume, great fun.

Comares Backstreet..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I loved this mountain town in Spain, such a lot of back alleys and fun white buildings.
Comares is a mountain town, perched very high up on a mountain, and sprawling over lots of hills and valleys.
One needs their walking shoes and lots of water to negotiate the many streets. Oh and a map! I got lost a few times.

This image is on Fabriano CP Paper.
11' x 16' unframed
$400 plus S/H

Portofino Street Scene..Watercolor..Terxas Artist..Rae Andrews

This scene is in Portofino Italy.. I loved this place, the small fishing area and all the bright buildings, just the reflections in the water alone and all the boats made for many paintings.
However, I stuck to building with this image and used my topsy turvy technique of deliberate distortion..

This technique makes (for me at least) the process of angles and perspective, a joy to draw.

Journal Entry from French Alps and Switzerland ..Watercolor..Texas Artist...Rae Andrewsw

Annecy is in the French Alps. This town was a part of the workshop I taught in the Alps recently.

We stayed here as well as Geneva (Switzerland) and Combloux in wonderful hotels. And the scenery was to die for!!

So back to Annecy, known as the 'Little Venice of the French Alps' and you can see why, I think. Lots of canals and reflections, just perfect for the artist in me!

We did a LOT of shopping here as well, so many interesting stores and markets to stroll.

I will have very fond memories of this workshop and my students, they all did an amazing job , but then it was very inspiring for any artist!

Memories of Venice..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I did this pastel quite a while ago, when testing out Canson Touch paper. My decision on this surface is still not cemented in stone, but I know for this painting at least, I did not love it!

There is very little 'tooth' on this surface and I am heavy handed with my pastel application, so problems arose right from the start. It's very easy to overwork the art on this surface so be warned,  have a light touch!

Today I dragged the image out of the file drawer and thought I would try and resurrect it a little.
I liked the concept, that semi-abstract view Venice is so famous for, reflections and angles... however, parts of this image really bothered me.

I am sort of happy with it now, but....
Maybe I will try it again on a different substrate, there's an idea.

Oh, I think if my memory serves me, I did use a few of my photos here for reference, and made a sort of 'jumbled' abstract from them.

Today, I just jumped in and enhanced what I had.
