Here I Am ! Watercolor..Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

Here I Am ! is a watercolor on Arches CP paper.
I did this one as a demo on my online classes.

An exercise on leaving interesting negative spaces and using a limited palette of colors.

The students did amazing work! I was blown away.

Garden Gaiety..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

A loose and spontaneous watercolor, this one was great fun to paint.

I did not pre-draw anything. I just found shapes onto which to build my flowers after a loose throw of paint.

I am always telling my students to leave the whites of the paper showing through, and to be aware of the shapes they make as well, no two white shapes should be the same size and importance.

If the design is a good one, the painting should be successfully turned in most directions and still look okay.

Try it, this way of painting is very freeing..

Journal Entry 7 (Arizona) Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

While in Sedona Arizona...a few years ago, we visited Jerome, a wonderful town, with 'ALPINE' vibes.
There was a ghost town there and this scene is from that old relic in time. I loved it! Abandoned buildings, chickens, old trucks, even a donkey and a wonderful bearded old gentleman who I think owned the museum...lots and lots to paint!

I would love to go back there. Maybe one day..

Saplings..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

SAPLINGS is a very loose watercolor on Arches paper.

It is unframed.
12" x 16"

Treetop Rascals..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This pastel is done on black velour paper.

I rarely use black paper, although the drama of it speaks for itself.

However, it is extremely difficult to get the lights and darks to read on this surface, especially with VELOUR PAPER.

The subject is of Lorikeets or as they are called in Australia, LORRIES..

Little imps which fly all over the eastern regions of Australia and are forever present in the treetops, calling to one another. The colors are truly amazing!

I hope I did them justice here.

This pastel is unframed and measures 9" x 15".

Alaska Dapple..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This pastel is another done on the Colorfix paper. The 'dusting technique' is used at the end of this piece, to get the sparkle.

The scene, mostly made up, although I saw many such scenes in these soft misty colors while on a trip to Alaska a few years ago. The light is so soft there, wonderful to paint.

This image is unframed and measures 8" x 8"
$150 Plus S/H

Honey Dipped..Gouache..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This is small one done in GOUACHE, my newest 'love'.

I see scenes such as this on my daily walks by the lake, and although this is really made up, it is an impression of my life.

Of course my colors are brighter than what is seen here in Texas, but that's me I guess.

This painting is 5" x 7" unframed
$60 plus S/H

Bull Creek 3..Gouache..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This small GOUACHE painting is of the Bull Creek area quite near me. I have painted it many times.
Just a lovely place to paint.

I am finding GOUACHE a great alternative to other plein air choices.

I tinted this watercolor paper with a soft yellow first in acrylics. After it was dry, I painted the scene in gouache.

I hope you like it, a fun one to do.

Tropical Design 1..Peerless Watercolor Inks.. Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I want to do this design in a bigger format and with pastels. For now this little image is done with PEERLESS WATERCOLOR INKS.

Prints are the only way I would sell this image as sadly, the PEERLESS INKS are not archival. :((

I sometimes like to 'nut' out a design I think might work on a smaller scale, then transfer the image to a more exciting larger format. Stay tuned..

This image is 8" x 8" on watercolor paper .

Small Gems. Gouache Landscapes....Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I guess because I have just been traveling and had to pack my art supplies in a very imaginative way, so my bags would not be overloaded, I am on a 'SMALL GEMS' kick right now.

I decided to get out my GOUACHE and explore this medium, which incidentally I feel is perfect for the traveling, plein air artist.

There are so many ways to use this paint. Splash it on  like watercolor, in a translucent to semi opaque way. Or opaquely and thicker, similar to acrylics.

I used a watercolor Fabriano block 5" x 7" .Just perfect for taking on a plane.

I tinted all the pieces first with a wash of a brightly even colored gouache, to get rid of the white paper.

I then proceeded to paint as I would an oil or acrylic painting, by building the layers to the desired values.

Gouache will dry slightly darker though, so you have to 'punch' the lights.

The first one is from my regular morning walk around the shores of Lake Travis here in Austin. Yesterday it was like a millpond, and the reflections were wonderful!

The tree one is completely made up. I just wanted to explore the shadows and the higher key palette.

I can honestly say this medium is very forgiving, and well worth exploring for plein air painting.

I hope you enjoy.. Comments are very welcome.
