A Welcome Release..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

The latest in this FLORAL SERIES.this one did not quite work for me and even now I’m not sure. The image below is what I started with.

This is before I worked further on this one..I was dissatisfied with the positioning of the bulk ..so I added more distribution of the background and then a pale lemon wash into some of the white areas. Oh and another flower in the lower area.

Swan Song..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Swan Song is a pastel on a sheet of velour paper.

I was given this paper about a year ago and the artist had drawn pencil lines all over it, not great for velour.

Its a very soft surface and one cannot erase off it.

So I decide not to waste it completely and try to superimpose this floral semi abstract over the top.

It was hard in places, as the white flower showed the transparent layers of the pastel a lot, but I think I have managed to cover all those nasty pencil lines at last.

I did another version of this floral before a few years ago and last night I put the image into Sketch Club on my ipad and abstracted it even more, by chopping and rearranging areas of my older image..

Swan Song began with random veils of pastel dragged over the surface, anything to camouflage those pencil lines.

I then drew my sketchy flower in pastel pencil over this.

By blocking negative shapes into the painting, the flowers began to emerge.

Rose..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I had the very wonderful pleasure of attending a mini workshop yesterday with JEANNETTE CUEVAS ..

Her technique is pastel over a watercolor base on cold pressed watercolor paper.

My attempt here was not wonderful however, and I came home and did more to it today and felt a bit happier with my result. Enough to put it on my blog site for sale now. I hope you agree.

Jeannette's style is linear, small strokes, one over the other to achieve such delicate nuances of color and tone, it's mesmerizing  to watch.

I usually work so quickly and am much heavier with my application of pastels, and her soft and delicate approach is very foreign to me..

Still I LOVE the technique and I thank Jeannette for her patience with us all, I for one will keep trying..

Here is a link to Jeannette's website..well worth seeing her wonderful work.

This little daisy watercolor is a fun little image I was demonstrating to a class ..The premise for this workshop was NEGATIVE PAINTING and also using wet into wet approaches.

I basically did not paint the flower, but concentrated on the background to make the flower appear.

Great fun!
