Another unframed pastel close focus of eucalyptus leaves.

I am loving this process of overlaying an abstraction of colors over the subject. I do this in my app Sketch Club on my IPad.

It gets me out of the ‘color doldrums’ and can totally surprise the eye..

I like to take my reference to a more abstract interpretation, and this one was so much fun to work with. The palm is in my backyard, and of course, the colors are all made up.

Bangalay Corroboree..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I had Aboriginals in mind when I painted this one. in their language, BANGALAY means Eucalyptus Tree and CORROBOREE means an event/ dance..hence the title..

**** I have since discovered that the language can differ regionally (throughout Australia )and for the species of tree ..

So BANGALAY might be incorrect in a general sense , but for the sake of this painting I will keep the title as is..

Un Petit Chien..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I had this off cut piece of bright deep velvet suede mat board, and decided to try a pastel of this sweet face on it.

The dog was in a market place in Provence a few years ago when I was there.

The red substrate was strong and a little daunting to control with my pastels, but I think I did okay with this one. On to the next now.

INTENT is an apt title for this one. The dog was on the Greek island of Myconos, and as much as I tried to get his attention so I could get a good shot, he/she refused to look my way. Still it was a gorgeous dog and I just had to paint it.

I have just purchased the new DARK UART PASTEL PAPER.. I liked it a lot, such a change from the drab sameness UART has always given us, of a sand color ...

Black paper is tricky though, and needs special consideration of the values one uses with pastels.

Neptunea (the steps) ..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Neptunea was born out of wanting a 'sister image' to my post ETHEREAL DANCE.

I attacked this one in the same way as a previous painting, Ethereal Dance, with an abstract underlay.

I then superimposed my shells over the top and embellished parts of the colors and shapes allowing my shells to evolve.

This is not an easy way to get a painting done, but it's so much fun!

I felt completely stimulated all the way through this image, which is very important to me.. I get bored very easily if a painting I am tackling is too easy. LOL.

Fan Palm Canopy..Step by Step ..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I guess I am on a bit of a close focus track right now, loving the abstraction.

As you might know by now, I love to challenge myself with design options and lots of color.

My reference photo was taken from my back yard, and it was on a very dull overcast day.  

I tweaked my colors and contrasts in Photoshop and found a nice combination this way for me to paint.

I would be lost without Photoshop, it's a must for artists or at least a similar photo correcting program.

So here is the overall process, I hope you like it..

I did quite a lot of reconstruction on the links from my initial drawing. I made the water up and the wharf, both of which were not visible in my photo, which incidentally was a chain I saw on Maui in the Maalaea Harbor.


I also turned this one every which way during my process, and finally decided to make it a horizontal format.
