Delightful Dance..Watercolor..Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

Getting ready for a Zoom Dancing Brushes 3 lesson today so thought I would give the students a design format a little like this one.

It makes you think about composition and how to allow the subject to shine without overworking the details.

I hope the students like this way of painting, I love it!

Design in Turquoise and Magenta..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This was a bit of an experiment in design.
I began with a lot of squiggly lines on the dry paper with masking fluid, and delineated some floral shapes as well.

On went the paint, and the 'pulling together' later of making something out of the mess. LOL

One just has to stay focused and check composition regularly when intuitively painting like this. Great fun though, gets the cobwebs out.

Pink Sorority Girls..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This one was done earlier this year, after my Spain trip. I just love placing geometry within my floral watercolors especially. Somehow it seems to draw the eye to the subject for me. It also stops me from moving into the white areas and overpainting.

Linear Connections.. Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I love to paint botanical studies and use geometry to break in and out of the background. Painting this way truly makes me think hard on design, and what works with composition.

The flowers are really made up, and I had no plan at all to begin this painting. So no pre-drawing at all. I just jumped in boots and all with paint.

Bangalay Corroboree..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I had Aboriginals in mind when I painted this one. in their language, BANGALAY means Eucalyptus Tree and CORROBOREE means an event/ dance..hence the title..

**** I have since discovered that the language can differ regionally (throughout Australia )and for the species of tree ..

So BANGALAY might be incorrect in a general sense , but for the sake of this painting I will keep the title as is..

Flash Dance..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Believe it or not this one used to be irises. I just labored so long on trying to make them work that I decided to throw in the proverbial towel and start all over.

The surface is a Richeson sanded panel and they take a LOT of torture. LOL.

I held it under a garden hose , blasting most of the iris image away, then let the panel dry.

I used some of the ghost image underneath to allow the fish to evolve. It was tricky, but then I love to complicate things, ha!

I really like the design of this one, and I certainly prefer it to my iris attempt. I hope you like it.

It is raining here in Texas and that always makes me want to paint. I had an urge to do a small design this time, hope you approve.

Mantled Epoch..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Mantled Epoch is cut from the same paper as the previous post. I am glad I stuck with this set of abstracts, always a little worrying to rely on one's design sense, but I do love that 'angst' in my art.

I began (after I had cut the full sheet in half as with my previous painting) by turning the remaining 'demo' image upside down.

As I worked by blocking in some hefty darks, I rotated every few minutes, and kept doing that till I settled on a pleasing composition.

Just by rotating the piece as I progressed, I saw so many opportunities evolve. Each rotation looked so different, and the focus became a different area of the painting.

I had a hard time, as with my previous post, to finally decide which rotation pleased me the most.
Eventually it was this one.

See the process of my thinking below, remember I had no reference with any of these abstracts, I just 'went with the flow' so to speak (pun intended).

This piece is 13" x 19" unframed
It is a pastel on red Sennelier paper.

Cavernous Tumble..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This painting started as a demo start, only partly done, and I did not want to toss the great paper.

It was a full sheet of reddish  Sennelier paper, which I turned upside down and cut in half so I have two pieces I can work on. (there will be another painting coming up soon from this paper)

I liked the color contrast in the demo, so just went with it.

I wanted to abstract my image (though) and after my France workshop last May and a visit to some amazing caves, I felt this image could be an 'echo' of that .

See all the steps below, to better explain.

This image is 13" x 19.5" unframed

$350 plus S/H

Prints of this image are also available through Fine Art America:

Below is a little on the thoughts behind my process.

As a finished painting the sheet directly below shows the image in all directions. I could still change my mind on this, it's an easy thing to erase my signature and place it elsewhere if I decided to perhaps go with a vertical format, I will have to live with my chosen top image for a few days and see how I feel.

The sheet below is my whole thought process throughout this painting. From an old demo partly done on a full sheet/cut in half/turned upside down/ and then gradually working around the shapes in a new painting.

Above, Below and Beyond..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I decided to pastel over a very banal tree landscape I had done in a quick demo years ago.

I have just attended an abstract workshop and I guess that is still n my mind, even though it was a watercolor workshop.

I needed a break away from pretty landscapes, and this is what I came up with.

Totally intuitive, no preconceived plan.

I did this on Sennelier paper in pastels.

It measures 11.25" x 25.5" unframed

$350 plus S/H

I am also posting my decision planning on the rotation of this design, I was pleased with it in every position actually, but decided on the above.

See what you all think, do you agree?

Tropical Design 1..Peerless Watercolor Inks.. Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I want to do this design in a bigger format and with pastels. For now this little image is done with PEERLESS WATERCOLOR INKS.

Prints are the only way I would sell this image as sadly, the PEERLESS INKS are not archival. :((

I sometimes like to 'nut' out a design I think might work on a smaller scale, then transfer the image to a more exciting larger format. Stay tuned..

This image is 8" x 8" on watercolor paper .

Tropical Fernery...Derwent Inktense Watercolor Ink Blocks..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I have a new TOY! Or a set of new toys actually!

One of my students had some of these to play with the other day,  and I thought I just had to have some for myself.
So I went online and ordered a set of 36. I elected to purchase the blocks as I think I will get more use out of them.
They have these in pencil form as well, and if you don't like getting dirty fingers (as you can with these blocks unless you use the holders Derwent sells) , the pencil option might be the best for you.

I bought my blocks on Amazon as I have free shipping with Prime. I did get a much better deal than buying through an art store, a savings of around $30!

DERWENT  INKTENSE  WATERCOLOR INK is really an oxymoron..
After all, Inks are INKS, WATERCOLOR (although similar), is quite a bit different for many reasons.

However, these are great fun to play with.
I would advise they are inks and could be fugitive, so check with the colors in a sunny area and see how they stand the test of time with lighfastness.

The colors are wonderful!

I used these just as a paintbox, a wet brush on the selected colors and away I went.

Another thing to note is they won't shift after they are dry, so there is no making mistakes, one simply must try to work around the 'mistake' to camouflage it.

But....you can glaze one color over another after the first is dry because of the above property.. Handy huh?
Something for which WATERCOLOR can be a little tricky, as colors can move when wet.

You can use a fluid wet into wet technique as well by wetting the paper first and letting the colors all merge together, although I felt watercolor does a better job of getting a smoother wash than the Intense blocks.

I used a wet into dry more deliberate method for my TROPICAL FERNERY  below.

I think these would be great for working outside on painting trips, easy to pack, not a lot one has to take. Also great in journals.

***I will post this painting on my print site as well (with a better photo), as that is the only way I would sell this image, due to light fastness question mark.

But for now, I give Derwent Inktense a two thumbs up!
I also think I could utilize them with under painting for my pastel work, what fun!

My first sketch in these inks, is approx. 8" x 8".

Shell Design ..Semi Abstract...Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

This is another semi abstract design done in pastels over acrylics.

I simply love this process. I never know the outcome, and these designs are always a challenge to me.

The whole surface is eventually covered in pastels in the form of pastel pencils and the soft variety sticks, after a fluid start with liquid acrylics and water.

I chose this elongated format as an added challenge, this gets me away from the 'expected' and I like the surprise .

The substrate is a white Richeson Sanded Board , which are fast becoming my favorite substrate for this mixed media work.

Rock Pool Treasure...Semi Abstract Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I had the pleasure of doing this demonstration for the Austin Pastel Society last Sunday.
It was very enthusiastic crowd and lots of fun showing my techniques..

My start was using FLUID ACRYLICS on a SAND colored Richeson sanded board.

It was then allowed to dry before I used my pastels pencils and soft pastels to make my shell shapes come into being. I used real shells for my inspiration.

In the end, my board is almost completely covered with pastels.

The shapes from the acrylic pour give me some exciting shapes to enhance or cover up, as the case might be.

I rarely know my chosen subject or how things will turn out using this technique. I rely on my sense of design and intuition.
This was a fun image to paint, I hope you enjoy this process.

This image is 16" x 20"
$250 (unframed)

I mostly use my mixtures of liquid acrylics applied with a needle nose applicator bottle

I manipulate the paint pour at times with a brush and water.

I used pastels over the top of the dry painted areas to make the shell shapes appear.

The finished piece.
