Double The Trouble..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Some of you might recognize my boys, this is Pebbles and Bam Bam, the loves of my life!

They are from two photos I had and I wanted to place them in water, to try and get a reflection and ACTION image.

I made the water up. It was a fun image to paint, and I am pretty pleased with this one.

This image is 18" x 24" unframed

The substrate is a dark gray Sennelier paper

Aussie Joker..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

These are my all time favorite Aussie birds, I just adore them. They cackle all the time in the treetops, and it's always what I remember the most about waking up...  their chuckles.

Once one starts, that sets them all off. So the Aussie bushland is constantly 'LAUGHING' at you..... Very funny!

This image is is a pastel on velour paper.
8" x 12" unframed
$175 plus S/H

Miss Nosey..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Meet Penny.. She was a wonderful dog, and belonged to my dear friend Evelyn,  both of whom have passed now.

Penny is a pastel on tan velour paper. I love this 'tricky' surface for my portraits, especially animals!

As I am conducting a pastel workshop with animals as my subject in January, I thought I had best 'pastel' up on my techniques.

This image is 8" x 9.5" unframed.
$100 plus S/H

Oh no, it's happened, I am becoming another ANIMAL PORTRAIT ARTIST!!

Those Big Brown Eyes..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This gorgeous child was tough to paint for me. The beautiful dark skin tones were what I struggled with, in fact this is my second attempt.

The child is a neighbor child of a friend and originally from Africa. And yes, those eyes are as large as that !

This pastel is done on velour paper.

10" x 14" unframed
$250 plus S/H

What's That? Pastel on Velour Paper..Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

The finished piece..

Here is my cut and paste of the boys in that light.. Two photos, I joined them.

What a difference the substrate makes!!
I went back to my old faithful VELOUR PAPER.. I just LOVE this paper for portraits!

I have had my babies here for over 4 years now, and this is the first joint portrait I have done of them.

And no, they are NOT redheads. However, when I took this set of photos it was sunset, and that red cast was on them, It was gorgeous light, I had to paint them as I saw them.

I used Photoshop to drop and drag the two pictures together, so I could work out composition.

I do this sort of thing a LOT in my work. I LOVE my computer..(sometimes) At times I could throw it through the window too!

But I digress.
This image is 20" x 10" on velour paper and is a pastel.

I am very happy with this one.

Vertical Splendor..Abstract Floral.. Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Again, this painting began as a wet into wet under painting for my pastels.

It is on a Richeson sanded board.

I guess I am on a roll with these florals, I hope you are not getting sick of them yet..

Maybe my next painting will be different genre, but I never plan things with my paintings, I just go with the flow, excuse the pun. :))

This image is unframed and measures 12" x 18".
$170 plus S/H

Lilies...Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

LILIES began with a watercolor throw in. Loose and with no pre-conceived notion of my subject at all.
After the colors all dried, I found I could work flowers into them. What a surprise..lol!

I think FLORALS are possibly the easiest subject for me to go with using this abstract throw in of wet media.

I had this photo of lilies from years ago and decided, with a few moderations, to let it guide me through this painting.

The substrate is UArt paper mounted onto acid free foamcore.
This image is 18" x 12" unframed

Shell Design ..Semi Abstract...Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

This is another semi abstract design done in pastels over acrylics.

I simply love this process. I never know the outcome, and these designs are always a challenge to me.

The whole surface is eventually covered in pastels in the form of pastel pencils and the soft variety sticks, after a fluid start with liquid acrylics and water.

I chose this elongated format as an added challenge, this gets me away from the 'expected' and I like the surprise .

The substrate is a white Richeson Sanded Board , which are fast becoming my favorite substrate for this mixed media work.

Original image is 20" x 7.7" (unframed

Rock Pool Treasure...Semi Abstract Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I had the pleasure of doing this demonstration for the Austin Pastel Society last Sunday.
It was very enthusiastic crowd and lots of fun showing my techniques..

My start was using FLUID ACRYLICS on a SAND colored Richeson sanded board.

It was then allowed to dry before I used my pastels pencils and soft pastels to make my shell shapes come into being. I used real shells for my inspiration.

In the end, my board is almost completely covered with pastels.

The shapes from the acrylic pour give me some exciting shapes to enhance or cover up, as the case might be.

I rarely know my chosen subject or how things will turn out using this technique. I rely on my sense of design and intuition.
This was a fun image to paint, I hope you enjoy this process.

This image is 16" x 20"
$250 (unframed)

I mostly use my mixtures of liquid acrylics applied with a needle nose applicator bottle

I manipulate the paint pour at times with a brush and water.

I used pastels over the top of the dry painted areas to make the shell shapes appear.

The finished piece.

Mystery...Pastel Abstract...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

This was a larger painting on Richeson board and I decided to cut it down and make two from it. This is one half.
I used a white Richeson board and threw my acrylics onto the surface to float and make shapes. Then I dried it and began to assess the 'damage'.

I began with a loose drawing of coconuts and palm fronds, and as the painting progressed it became more and more abstract.
I love it when the painting governs the artist, the hard part is not fighting it in the process and having fun with it.

Delicate Balance...Abstract Design...Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

This one is a pastel over an acrylic underlay, although most of that is hidden with pastels now.

That's the beauty of starting a painting like this, the acrylic gives you an option to go with the patterns the paint has made or not. Pastel is an opaque medium so it is not that hard to diminish the acrylic if you desire.

I mostly use my pastel pencils though, on this Richeson sanded surface. Oh, and yes, I am smudging quite a bit after the pastel is applied, something I rarely do with my pastels. This surface is pretty rough and for these designs I prefer a smoother result.

I hope you like this one.

It is an 8" x 10" unframed piece on foam sanded board.

Dalliance...Abstract...Pastel over Acrylic Inks..Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

Another small abstract..

This one is done with pastels over inks.. I had no idea what this paper was, but I mounted it onto the archival foamcore and away I went.

It had no tooth whatsoever, and I am glad I have no more of it. :((

As a result I stuck to small format images. Next time I will wear my glasses when selecting my papers..Ha!

The piece is inspired by a visiting dragon fly which comes to my backyard on a regular basis, it's quite stunning shimmering in the sun.

This image is for sale at $75..
Free S/H within the contiguous USA.
Image size is 4.25" x 7.5" unframed.

Source...Abstract...Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

I walk every day with my dogs, and the area I walk is very lovely, full of trees.. I have seen the remnants of a wonderful old tree continually on my walks, it's  really just a stump with exposed roots, but to an artist, it is lovely. To anyone else, probably it's just good firewood. :((

So today I decided to give you all my 'impression' of what I see daily.

Of course with my penchant for COLOR and MOVEMENT , you are sure to realize my image is wildly embellished .

This is a 5" x 10" pastel on gatorboard (unframed).

$150 plus S/H
