Rainforest Mystery..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Lots of fun doing this tropical painting.
I am getting ready to teach a lesson on strong darks and drama using watercolors.
There is truly a myth about watercolor, where people are led to believe that watercolor cannot get dark..
This is ALL watercolor and look at those strong darks!

12” x 16”
Watercolor on Arches CP paper
$350 plus S/H

The process of this painting is also in a short You Tube video on my channel.

Treeline on the Ridge..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This is a small little pastel on my mystery paper, have no clue what it is? I was tetsing it with the acrylic inks as an under base, as with the previous post, just to see how it went.

It passed enough for me to do the larger more detailed pastel i previously posed.

This image is 4.5" x 11" unframed
$100 plus S/H

Spring Accents..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Just finished this one after a lovely walk in the greenbelt of Lake Travis yesterday. The colors of spring are everywhere, what a perfect time of the year!

This is an 8" x 10" pastel on a new substrate for me, a MULTIMEDIA BOARD .

I ordered a few of these the other day, and while the jury's still out on it, I am finding it interesting to use.
I began this image with a loose watercolor under painting, then used my pastels over the top.

The surface is not that gritty, so I found I had to be super careful with my pressure applying the pastels.

$125 plus S/H

Bluebonnet Dazzle..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

When I moved to Texas from Maui, I swore I would never paint bluebonnets as they are a constant theme here with artists.

Hmmm. well I guess lied to myself.

These flowers are just so gorgeous when you see a hillside covered in that blanket of mauves and blues, simply spectacular!

They are all popping up here in Austin with this burst of spring weather, and I simply could not ignore them.

Having said that, here is my token BLUEBONNET pastel. It is on a  deep charcoal gray Sennelier sanded paper.

7.5" x 11.5" unframed
$175 plus S/H

Zig Zag Path..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Just completed this on this weekend. I used a lot of the scumbling technique and a little bit of 'dusting' at the end of the process.

The scene is here in Austin, Texas, and to the everyday walker I would think it just looked 'green'..
To me, however, as I love color, I saw turquoise and mauve.. We artists are a strange lot huh?

But I think it great we can look at things through 'rose colored glasses'.

This image is 8" x 11.5" unframed.
$200 plus S/H

'Fella'..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

'Fella' was a dog I saw in Spain a couple of years ago, and try as I might he would not look at me; but instead was intent on looking at something off to the left. Still I managed a good shot of him. Such a cute little dog..

This is a pastel on velour paper.

$125 plus S/H

Fall Drama..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

FALL DRAMA is really an imaginary place.. I overlapped two very colorful photos over each other and 'played' with the image on my IPad.
This is the result. Great fun, and a nice way to just 'let go' with colors out of the ordinary.

I hope you approve.:))

Miss Nosey..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Meet Penny.. She was a wonderful dog, and belonged to my dear friend Evelyn,  both of whom have passed now.

Penny is a pastel on tan velour paper. I love this 'tricky' surface for my portraits, especially animals!

As I am conducting a pastel workshop with animals as my subject in January, I thought I had best 'pastel' up on my techniques.

This image is 8" x 9.5" unframed.

Tranquility..Pastel ..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I actually did this one in 10 minutes. It was my strategy to be quick, precise and playful.

This is a great way to loosen up .

I also have been using the small formats, this one is again a 4,25" x 5,5" Sennelier sanded panel.
Ideal for a quick study.

This one is $60 plus S/H and is unframed.

Winter Hues, Lake Travis...Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Brrrrrr! My walk was brisk today! The winter winds are with us here in Austin, and it was very cold!

The colors are a little embellished in this pastel, but you all know me by now, COLOR is my thing.

Perfect Walk..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Just finished this one. Sooo cozy in my studio with all the rain we are having, perfect to paint!

The scene is one I took a photo of while on my morning walk in Austin. I love this greenbelt area, so much to see. Of course I tend to romanticize my colors.

In actual fact they were all pretty green on the actual day, so this is with the 'Rae' touch. :))

Last Light..Pastel.. Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This pastel was an experiment with DARK VALUES and CONTRAST..

I made the image up, however all of us at some time, would have seen that glorious afterglow when the sun is going down. I am always in awe looking at sunsets.

This was a fun, quick image to paint. I hope you like it. :))

It is on Sennelier paper and is unframed.

Quiet Inlet..Pastel;..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

QUIET INLET is completely from my imagination. I am still playing with TEXTURES.

Totally new to me is the concept of 'DUSTING' pastels, and I know I am possibly doing too much of it of late, but I just LOVE the effect!

So this little painting is approx. 8" x 13" unframed.
It is on UART paper mounted onto archival foam core.
$130 plus S/H

(Dusting by the way, is when you shave your pastels (preferably hard to medium) onto the surface, place some Glassine paper over the top gently, then roll a brayer onto this, to crush the pastels. )

I am just using it to spark the textures of grasses mainly, and of course I have used it in sanded areas and water/foam of my seascapes as well.

Red Bud Beauty..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

After looking at this one, I decided to use some DUSTING on the surface, what fun to make more of a sparkle to  the surface.

Here is my adjusted 'DUSTED' image.

RED BUD BEAUTY is a pastel on a UArt sanded panel.
It is unframed.

This image is 8.6" x 13" unframed

Sundown Glow..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Again I thought this one also could have a bit more spark, so I DUSTED this image as well. Here is the adjusted image.

I think this one works extremely well with additional DUSTING..

This pastel is done on UArt paper which I mounted to foam core. It is unframed.

I am playing with textures right now with my pastel paintings, and these grasses are great fun to explore with this technique.
