Little Bird..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

                                                         This one is my first in this style.


Recently I had the pleasure of seeing one of my favorite artists Rita Kirkman work on how she gets her small animal paintings to glow as she does.

I have to say it's a tedious preparation for me, who mostly works very broadly and quickly.


Rita has a technique where she under paints her images on gator foam with pumice gel she tints with acrylic.


She usually works quite small too with all her animal renditions. This also goes against my usual painting format, as I like large formats.


I love the results she gets though, and I am sorry Rita, my poor examples don't do your demo justice.

I feel almost happy with it, but it's no Rita Kirkman.


Still, that's not what we should strive for, right? We (artists)  are an eclectic group of people, gathering information and ideas all the time and experimenting with possibilities for our own works.


Maybe I should call this one 'Homage to Rita'...


I have another one I also did in this technique, equally challenging, and I will post it now as well.

Sea Cliff Haze..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Having traveled along the Amalfi Coast and seeing the wonderful vista of cliffs and misty coastline, this image evolved from memory. I often draw on my imagination when painting, I find it quite meditative. Just to let myself go with the rhythm of the sea and allow the marks to 'flow' from your fingertips..

Soft background music is also a help with this particular way of painting.

I know a lot of my students go through some angst when they can't pluck an image out of their heads and I understand this. It's not for everyone..

Even if you use a photo to begin a painting, put it away after the first few basic design strokes, and let your memory work for you, it does work, and you will get more of a 'personal feeling' about your scene which is (for me) far more seductive for your viewer.

I was trained to visually see a scene and memorize it a lot, especially with seascapes.

Also doing so many demos for various art groups, sometimes I have to use what's in my head to get a point across.
So, I so hope you like this one.. Seascapes are magical to paint, especially with pastels.

I used Pastel Premier paper for this one, and this surface is becoming a favorite of mine I have to admit. There is not a great deal of texture to it as with Sennelier, so certain subjects might not work as well for me. However, seascapes are a perfect subject matter.

Morning Glow..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This pastel is on a MULTIMEDIA ART PANEL. I have been playing with this surface of late, and although it's not as sanded as I like usually, the possibilities are endless with the media one can put down first (under the pastel overlays).
.
I used watercolor as an underlay, very wet into wet.

No preconceived ideas, just letting the paint run together and see what happened.

I saw a treeline come out of the marks made by the paint, perhaps after my morning walk through the greenbelt near me yesterday.

However the scene is really out of my imagination.

A fun painting to do, hope you like it!

Zig Zag Path..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Just completed this on this weekend. I used a lot of the scumbling technique and a little bit of 'dusting' at the end of the process.

The scene is here in Austin, Texas, and to the everyday walker I would think it just looked 'green'..
To me, however, as I love color, I saw turquoise and mauve.. We artists are a strange lot huh?

But I think it great we can look at things through 'rose colored glasses'.

Saplings..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

SAPLINGS is a very loose watercolor on Arches paper.

I wanted to get the scragginess of the saplings in the light, and used my rigger basically for 2/3's of the process. 

It is unframed.
