Rainforest Mystery..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Lots of fun doing this tropical painting.
I am getting ready to teach a lesson on strong darks and drama using watercolors.
There is truly a myth about watercolor, where people are led to believe that watercolor cannot get dark..
This is ALL watercolor and look at those strong darks!

12” x 16”
Watercolor on Arches CP paper
$350 plus S/H

The process of this painting is also in a short You Tube video on my channel.

Dusk Over the Marshes..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I just finished this one. Trying out my new Heilman Double Sketchbox and easel.

A little pricey, but well worth it I think. I love the small box for my plein air excursions.

I have a large Heilman pastel box as well, but it is so cumbersome for me to cart around the countryside or overseas.

Hence I bit the bullet and purchased this small one. I think it does the trick perfectly. This box opens to around 9.25" x 14.5" wide, enabling me to fill it with pastels on both sides, plenty for traveling. The closed box is only 7.25" x 9.25" .

I also purchased the 18" easel (I had the 24" easel with my larger box) .
These easels  slot neatly into the ready made holes Heilman have made for it. Works so well!

FYI..This whole outfit cost $180 for the box and $50 for the easel..

Bluebonnet Dazzle..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

When I moved to Texas from Maui, I swore I would never paint bluebonnets as they are a constant theme here with artists.

Hmmm. well I guess lied to myself.

These flowers are just so gorgeous when you see a hillside covered in that blanket of mauves and blues, simply spectacular!

They are all popping up here in Austin with this burst of spring weather, and I simply could not ignore them.

Having said that, here is my token BLUEBONNET pastel. It is on a  deep charcoal gray Sennelier sanded paper.

7.5" x 11.5" unframed
$175 plus S/H

Zig Zag Path..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Just completed this on this weekend. I used a lot of the scumbling technique and a little bit of 'dusting' at the end of the process.

The scene is here in Austin, Texas, and to the everyday walker I would think it just looked 'green'..
To me, however, as I love color, I saw turquoise and mauve.. We artists are a strange lot huh?

But I think it great we can look at things through 'rose colored glasses'.

This image is 8" x 11.5" unframed.

Journal Entry 7 (Arizona) Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

While in Sedona Arizona...a few years ago, we visited Jerome, a wonderful town, with 'ALPINE' vibes.
There was a ghost town there and this scene is from that old relic in time. I loved it! Abandoned buildings, chickens, old trucks, even a donkey and a wonderful bearded old gentleman who I think owned the museum...lots and lots to paint!

I would love to go back there. Maybe one day..

River Grasses..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I guess after the last very soft and subdued post I made, I needed to break loose again with some vivid RAE ANDREWS color! So here is that result.

The Gathering.. Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This pastel is done on Sennelier sanded paper. It is unframed.
It measures 19.5" x 25.5"

The beautiful bird is actually of Gomez, who was my (BABY) macaw's 'boyfriend' when I lived on Maui.

I superimposed Gomez several times, but opted to just do the two birds and some made up flowers.

Sunny Side..Pastel THE PROCESS....Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

While on my usual walk each morning, I see this lovely tree all the time,. Sparse and glowing with the sun on it. I decided I wanted to paint it.

I photographed it and placed my photo into Sketch Club on my IPad.

I cropped the scene, then overlapped a photo of an old colorful painting of mine making 2 layers.

I often do this, especially if the actually colors are a little dull in my photo. It is challenging to find a happy medium, not too colorful, yet, giving the scene an 'edge'.

With my trusty stylus, I manipulated the colors to fall in areas that pleased me, and flattened the layers.

The results I hope speak for themselves. I was ready to try a painting.

Shoreline Drift..Gouache and watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Another small watercolor/gouache painting I finished last night.

I am going to call these (COUCH PAINTINGS) because that's where I paint them. Just doodles, but great fun and it keeps me from going to the fridge in the ad breaks. Ha!

Tropical Design 1..Peerless Watercolor Inks.. Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I want to do this design in a bigger format and with pastels. For now this little image is done with PEERLESS WATERCOLOR INKS.

Prints are the only way I would sell this image as sadly, the PEERLESS INKS are not archival. :((

I sometimes like to 'nut' out a design I think might work on a smaller scale, then transfer the image to a more exciting larger format. Stay tuned..

This image is 8" x 8" on watercolor paper .

In This Land Of Magical Beasts..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I have done this image before in acrylics, at least a version of it.

My source photo was a composit I made in Sketch Club on my IPad. I love that app. I overlap my images in many layers to get some wonderful shapes.

The hard part is transposing them to my pastel paper.

In this case, my paper is Sennelier paper which was a bright rust color.
I also splashed the surface with water to get the mottled texture effect I have used in the past. A new practice for me, and one I love obviously. :))

The image is unframed and measures 19.6" x 25.6"

Beach Grass Shadows..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

After painting, it seems, for weeks, such structured watercolors, I needed a break, something ethereal and understated. Large, loose, and wild!!

So this one is just off the easel. I hope you like it. On my many walks on Maui last year I passed some wonderful sand dunes and grasses, casting shadows to die for. This is a made up version of this memory.

This is a watercolor on Arches paper
18" x 24" unframed

Beyond The Point..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Beyond The Point ...is a completely made up painting. I tested my compositional skills with this design.

That fence post, is almost dead center, however I am okay with that.

I found all the other angles help move the eye away from that point, at least hopefully they do.. :))

This is a large unframed watercolor on Arches paper. 18" x 24"

$550 plus S/H
