Skyscape is the 11th one I have done in this series of watercolors lately. Great fun to sculpt the clouds out of nothing. I find myself looking up at the sky a lot lately, studying the cloud shapes.

Skyscape 6..Watercolor...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

I decided to just do some small skyscapes in watercolor yesterday. Just for fun.

The cloud shapes set the mood for the drama I wanted to portray. 

My studio looks out over Lake Travis here in Austin, and I see some wonderful sunsets and clouds every day, just magic.

So here is the first of a few small watercolors. Enjoy..

Twists and Turns Near Johnson City..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I just finished this pastel..

The surface is the all cotton sanded Pastel Premier paper.. I am liking this surface a lot especially for my landscapes.

The scene is mostly for memory, and is very near Johnson City on the way to Fredericksburg here in Texas.

I pass it a lot in the car, never stopping to take a photo, but it always gets my attention on the highway. That zig zag line again, can't resist!

The colors are very embellished to suit my mood, and I am sure with the end of summer, the river is nowhere near as full as this is, but I am an artist, what can I say?

This rather spectacular sky is very near where I used to teach in Australia in the Bathurst area. The landscape in this area is always so dramatic, and that Aussie light is truly magnificent!

Another of these different shaped formats, I love to challenge myself with something out of the norm.

This pastel is all about the sky as was the last one I posted, and completely made up (again), as with the last post.

 I saw so many skies like this at sundown while in France, just captivating. The way the light hit the rolling hills, just had to paint it.

I love cloud formations, and the drama they portray! Wow!

Last Light Over the Hills, France..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Another landscape of the area around Frayssinet in southwest France . This area is dotted with sheep farms, and wonderful pastures.

I just happened to be walking at twilight and saw this heavenly sky, just had to try and do it justice.

I also love this panoramic format, challenging but perfect for this genre.

The substrate is a sanded paper, not sure which one, but it's not Sennelier. Maybe Wallis?

Diving into my stock drawer is a bit of a lucky dip with selecting my papers for pastels. :))

Maui Riptide..Pastel.. Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I guess I felt a need for a completely different genre, so here goes nothing.

This is a scene from my walks on Sugar Beach Maui. It's a long beach and great to stretch my legs.

I just love to watch the waves, and the way the light plays on the top of the crests.

A seascape needs to be studied at length before painting it, after all, it's never still for us, and photos simply don't do it justice.

They flatten the light and dull down the colors.

Having said that, this is a composite from my photos, and a lot is from memory, an impression, that's what I was aiming for.

Dramatic Sky Over Luzech Vineyards, France..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

While in France this trip, we painted en plein air at a winery very near to Le Vieux Couvent where we stayed.

The day was a great . The weather was gorgeous for us, and those skies were spectacular!

I always enjoy skyscapes, and I love to embellish them a lot. I wanted this sky to be the 'star of the show'.

I did this one in my studio here at home from a photo I took on the day, (the latter on the day, was very green, and the sky was actually a gray blue in color.

However, I feel a photo never does a scene justice, it will always flatten the light..and we as the artists, can feel free to take great liberties with nature.

Here is my version of a spectacular day. I felt the 'romantic' mood colors of violets and magentas against the ochre/greens, made for a more dramatic statement.

Another pastel demonstration to show people the way to approach SKIES.

After my quick demo, all the students tried their own version of a dramatic sky, and WOW! they all did so well. I will post a few soon.

The key to a painting such as this, is simplicity, as little detail as possible, making the sky 'the star of the show'.

Subdued Light..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

High Key paintings do not come as easy to me as an image in the low key (darker values) range.

I thought I would try one, just to get into some 'dangerous waters' so to speak.

I think we all need to do this occasionally, and not stay in our SAFE zone all the time. Sound familiar?

I made this image up, and wanted the drama of the soft sky to be the main feature.

I used Canson Mi Teintes Touch paper, which is not my favorite, but hey, what the heck!

I felt a need for the 'pop' of red in the front grasses just to get that area to read closer to the viewer. This I did with the 'dusting' technique.
Great fun!
