Comares Backstreet..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I loved this mountain town in Spain, such a lot of back alleys and fun white buildings.
Comares is a mountain town, perched very high up on a mountain, and sprawling over lots of hills and valleys.
One needs their walking shoes and lots of water to negotiate the many streets. Oh and a map! I got lost a few times.

This image is on Fabriano CP Paper.
11' x 16' unframed
$400 plus S/H

Carnival..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This pastel is on a full sheet of Sennelier La Carte paper..

I like to take my reference to a more abstract interpretation, and this one was so much fun to work with. The palm is in my backyard, and of course, the colors are all made up.

19.5” x 25” ( unframed)
Pastel on sanded paper
$500 plus S/H

This image is also available as a print through my Fine Art America Print Site.

A Wandering..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I just finished this one. It's of the river area near my home. I have done several plein air paintings of it.
This one however, I painted in the studio today, from my photograph.

Green on green is beautiful in nature, but in a painting, it tends to be a bit much of the same thing for me.

I usually play with complimentary colors, such as the orange/red family and even some blue/mauve colors as small accents amongst the green.

I hope you like this one. For me, it was very meditative to paint.

This image measures 16" x 20" unframed
$550 plus S/H

The Bridge, Saint Germaine..Pastel...Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This image was a demo in pastels I did while on my France workshop in Frayssinet.

This day we all went to Saint Germaine, and sadly, the heavens opened up and dumped buckets of rain on us. So we sort refuge back at le Vieux Couvent and the lovely dry studio for a couple f hours.

Such is the weather in France, and not long after the rain, the sun was out again and we all went to a great antique market in Labastide Murat.

One never knows with France, but one thing seems to be for sure, the weather does not stay bad for long.

This is a pastel on tan Sennelier sanded paper.
9" x 12"
This original image is no longer available

A Gentle Sway to the Left..Oil..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

.

And now for something completely different! Yep, I actually got out my poor old oil paints today and decided to break into them 'gently' as it's been a few years.

This is an oil panel, no idea what brand, I think it's one I gessoed myself eons ago.

I did tint the panel first with a magenta acrylic, and that is the color you see peeping through the oil overlays.

I love to work on a tinted surface, and mostly it's been with my pastel and watercolor/gouache paintings I admit. So why not my oils?

I think I will try to do more of these smaller oils for a while, they are a challenge for me..

I love a challenge, don't you? I mean, we can get stagnated in our thoughts and practices in our art, (at least I do), and get stuck on things that feel safe for us.

Setting a challenge occasionally (with color, subject or medium ..even all of the above) , can stop the monotony, if nothing else, it will make you step out of 'SAFE MODE' and make you work harder..

So.....Don't get comfortable, or formularize your art, that's the kiss of death. I have seen many very capable artists 'paint themselves out' when they stick to only one area of expertise/genre, one that sells for them, or one in which they feel SAFE.

It's size is 8" x 10"
$150 unframed

Zig Zag Stroll Into Town..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I revamped this older watercolor I had done a while ago. I did not want to toss it out, hoping I cold retrieve it somehow when I had the time. Yesterday I worked on it again, I think I am happier with it now.

This pastel is done on tan velour paper. I have always loved this surface for my pastels, however, of late I have also been using suede mat board, which is fun to use with a variety of more colors.

Of Corpus Contrasts..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I just finished this one in my cozy studio while the sleet falls outside and the temperatures drop..

Brr... it's cold today. A great day to be painting!

This one is on an Ampersand Pastelboard.

I usually stay away from this kind of support as I prefer one with more 'tooth' to it for my pastels. However, this one worked pretty well for me, so I am glad I persevered.

Like Music Adrift..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Hi again, I am finally able to get back to a post on this blog. My hubby has been in hospital yet again, and my life is just very scattered right now, so no time for painting. Grrr!

I started this one about three days ago. It is a 19.5" x 25.5" pastel on red Sennelier sanded paper (unframed). This one was cathartic for me, with all the stress over the last few months. Just to paint again has been a real treat!

I love to paint water in any form as you may realize, and this rock pool (without the shells) was on Maui . I again 'sparked up my colors using Photoshop on my photo.
I used my own shell collection to pop in a little more interest.

I hope you like it. It was a fun image to paint.

Morning Glow with Adjustments..Watercolor...Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Some of you might recall this original post of flowers.. It is a large watercolor on Arches heavy weight paper.. I was always a bit unhappy with it, so decided to adjust a few things today and add some more elements. Here is the old and the new version.

I thought you might like to read my thoughts on this one.

Sorry about the lighting, it was a bit different today when I took the bottom shot.

I did not like the largeness of that one petal especially (almost in the center) of the painting. I decided to try and camouflage the edges of it with more leaves and shadows.

I then added two more blooms in that top right area. I think it's better, but you never know, I might even add more leaves later. I just have to live with it for a while again.

My main message to you is not to give up on an image, especially if in part, it shows promise. Sometimes you need to take a break and ponder possibilities.

The picture below shows the painting as it is now. I will post it on its own in the next post as well..

Morning Glow is a watercolor on Arches paper unframed
                                                                   22.5"x 28"

Both versions are available in print from Fine Art America

Gentle Slope 2..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I have done a very similar image in gouache before and liked the painting enough to try it in watercolor this time.

It's amazing how different the two paintings can be when in a different medium. I did make the watercolor painting a closer rendition to the viewer,  but it's basically the same general scene.

This is the gouache interpretation.

This watercolor is a 6.5" x 6.5" is on Arches paper and is unframed.

Woodland Display..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This again was a demo I just embellished. It was an exercise on color and the use of complementary opposites on the color wheel. Green on its own can be very overpowering, and although in nature we do see a lot of green, I like to 'jazz' it up with opposite colors, as with this image. The pinks and oranges help offset the green nicely.

                                                        This image is 14" x 14" unframed
                                                                               $175 Plus S/H

Lakeside Sunglow..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This pastel is done on a Uart Panel. I started it a while ago and was not happy with it. Today I did a bit of 'surgery' on the work, and feel ready to post.

I hope you like it.

The scene is one I look at daily on my walks with the puppies, we love our lakeview.

Treetop Rascals..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This pastel is done on black velour paper.

I rarely use black paper, although the drama of it speaks for itself.

However, it is extremely difficult to get the lights and darks to read on this surface, especially with VELOUR PAPER.

The subject is of Lorikeets or as they are called in Australia, LORRIES..

Little imps which fly all over the eastern regions of Australia and are forever present in the treetops, calling to one another. The colors are truly amazing!

I hope I did them justice here.

This pastel is unframed and measures 9" x 15".
$155 plus S/H
