Comares Backstreet..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I loved this mountain town in Spain, such a lot of back alleys and fun white buildings.
Comares is a mountain town, perched very high up on a mountain, and sprawling over lots of hills and valleys.
One needs their walking shoes and lots of water to negotiate the many streets. Oh and a map! I got lost a few times.

This image is on Fabriano CP Paper.
11' x 16' unframed
$400 plus S/H

Spanish Portal..Watercolor..Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

This watercolor is on a Crescent Watercolor Board. It is presented unframed

Spanish Portal
15" x 20"
$300 Plus S/H

I took photos of this one in stages.. I often get asked how I keep such clean colors.. well I keep a lot of the white paper showing in all my works if I can and no, I don’t use masking fluid (or very rarely).

I simply work in stages ..in  SPANISH PORTAL

I worked the foliage first, and embellished the foreground with some pot plants..  here are my progress photos.

The pathway behind the gate gets more shadows and foliage on it, and I finish off with a small splatter of paint in the foreground to break the entryway up a little.

I find this method of painting a more complicated scene easier to control. Just sorting the painting into sections, and I can keep the white of the paper pristine this way as well.

Journal Entry 1 (Spain) ..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Well I am off and running again soon to teach a workshop in France.

I will be mostly doing pastels for my demos, but a few watercolorists are also coming, so I will be taking that medium as well and jounaling is a great plein air tool.

I always take a watercolor journal to get quick sketches in. They are such fun, not to mention a lovely way to capture the memories of a trip, and who knows, each image could become a more serious painting after I get home.

I bought some new journals off Amazon recently, and have to say, I like this paper a lot. Especially for pen and ink work. See below for the brand I am using.

This scene (above) is in Spain, after my last trip. Cadaques, not far from where Salvador Dali lived.

I was walking by this house and a man was sitting on his stoop enjoying the shade. He saw I was taking photos and we got chatting.

He invited me into his very lovely courtyard and I took numerous photos, so nice of him to share his privacy.

THE PROCESS...
I did a pencil sketch first on the paper, then worked over it with a fine tip permanent marker before using some watercolor washes.

The book I bought is Stillman and Birn Mixed Media sketchbook, the BETA sreies.
I can recommend them.

I purchased a hard cover and a soft cover one, and both are great for watercolor, opening pretty flat while I work on them with washes. I do use a clothes peg at each corner just to secure the pages though.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy these few pages I have done..You might like to try jounaling, it's great fun!

Another Journal Entry from Spain trip..Texas Artist.. Rae Andrews

Just finished this journal entry from the Costa Brava trip.

A few of us stayed in Barcelona after the workshop and then got tours of the various museums and artist houses. This area is Cadaques, and in the next bay is Dali's house which is now a museum. Amazing!

This journal entry is mostly watercolors, with a few of the watercolor markers as well.

Thanks for visiting..

Watercolor demo Costa Brava..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I never love my demos, and this one is okay as demos go, but I think I will do it again without the frenzy of trying to show a group.

The place is Calella De Palafrugell a lovely small inlet on the Costa Brava coast.
The crowds were at least not as bad this day on the beach, we got out early. Of course my painting has no people in it, but the boat I am painting is the one near the lady on the orange beach towel.

This is a watercolor on Arches CP paper.

The group and what a fun group it was!
Natalia top left was our guide each day, a treasure!
Then Ed, Vicki, Diane, Janet, Mary, Rae, Nancy and Sue.

Colors Of Spain..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Back into a few watercolors now. My life is set between painting in all genres and all media. Keeps me from getting bored.
I hope it also keeps you from getting bored.

This scene was in Spain (can't recall where) but my photo was pretty dark so I worked on a little sketch on my IPad in the Sketch Club app.
It helped me to doctor the colors and light I needed to use.

This image is 12" x 16" unframed
$250 plus S/H
