Saint Martin De Vers..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews
Still having fun with these sketches.
It seems to suit my love of drawing and color.
This one is a small village in Southwest France, called Saint Martin De Vers, I visited while teaching at Le Vieux Couvent.
The houses did actually look all crooked and tumbling down, although I have embellished that’s fact in my drawings.
I used my Tombow gray markets to establish my values first and then used my watercolors ..I find this a really fun way to get these sketches started.
I embellish with permanent markers later, getting all my details and implied textures in place.
This image is 11” x 14” and is on Fabriano Hot Press paper.

Journal Entry..Greek Islands..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews
Today’s journal entry is of the Greek Islands. I took a cruise around the islands with my dearest artist pals a few years ago, great fun!
This image is from the island of Myconos, an island I had been to before, but still remains a favorite of mine.
I used my larger 8” x 10” Stillman Birn journal for this one.

Journal Entry from French Alps and Switzerland ..Watercolor..Texas Artist...Rae Andrewsw
Annecy is in the French Alps. This town was a part of the workshop I taught in the Alps recently.
We stayed here as well as Geneva (Switzerland) and Combloux in wonderful hotels. And the scenery was to die for!!
So back to Annecy, known as the 'Little Venice of the French Alps' and you can see why, I think. Lots of canals and reflections, just perfect for the artist in me!
We did a LOT of shopping here as well, so many interesting stores and markets to stroll.
I will have very fond memories of this workshop and my students, they all did an amazing job , but then it was very inspiring for any artist!

Bull Creek Cascade 1..Pastel..Plein Air..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews
This small pastel on Sennelier paper was done on Tuesday en plein air.
It's a race against the sun while painting en plein air, as most of you already know.
That light is ever elusive, and changeable, so one has to work quickly.
Tuesday here in Austin was a glorious day, and what a great day to share with my painting buddy Char, We stumble over the rocks together searching for the best spot in which to paint. We often have to give each other a hand up or a 'boot' up, it's a scream!
I guess to onlookers, we look a bit crazy, but we sure have fun!
So.. having said that, I managed two paintings, both small, and maybe something I can work on as a bigger painting in my studio later.
I mostly do small outside paintings, to get the feel for the scene, and if I like the experience, I will often make a studio painting from these sketches.
This is 8" x 11" unframed

Bush Walk Textures..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews
Bush walk Textures is a small pastel, using layering of WORKABLE FIXATIVE as a tool, not a means to an end.
I have never liked using FIXATIVE, however, I find it great to protect underneath pastel layers, so I can SCUMBLE more soft layers over the areas. This is how I get this wonderful texture.
I also used a little DUSTING as a final touch.
This image is 6" x 8" on an unframed panel.
$100 Plus S/H

Demo 2 from Costa Brava..Watercolor.. Texas Artist.. Rae Andrews
This was another demo I did on the trip to Spain. As I have already posted the full view of this scene as a journal entry a few days ago, you can now see how, as plein air artists, we can move things around to suit our mood.
I decided I wanted to make the scene more about the rugged coast, not all the foreground information.

Let's Journal!..Watercolor Markers.. Texas Artist..Rae Andrews
As I travel a lot painting, and will be taking off to Spain shortly to teach a workshop there, I thought I had better brush up (excuse the pun) on my journaling skills.
As you possibly know, traveling now is not what it used to be, and the lighter your load the better, or else one gets stuck with baggage fees. Yikes!
I have learned the hard way and now take as little as possible, this includes clothing and art supplies.
Of course journaling is not for everyone, but it is fun and very easy to pack your gear.
I use Winsor and Newton Watercolor Markers, and I love the Strathmore Watercolor journals, the hard cover type.
I usually draw a loose idea of the scene in pencil first, then go right in with the markers. You can loosen the watercolor with a wet brush and even make washes such as skies.
I don't usually use ink marker to delineate after as some sketchers do, but merely use my black watercolor marker. (they have a large brush end as well as a smaller fine tip end).
It is enough to touch areas of impact with some detailed lines.
Try it, these markers are great fun..

Fishing Boats..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews
This is a watercolor of boats on Arches paper.
I love to leave a lot of the whites of the paper showing, as many of you already know.
This time I made a few linear marks in a water soluble graphite pencil, as I wanted to make the boats, the 'stars of the show'.
This image measures 12" x 18" unframed and is
$250 plus S/H

Once Was Morocco. Pastel Portrait..Texas Artist...Rae Andrews
It seems I am on a portrait kick for now.
This old man was watching the snake charmer in my last post.
He had the softest blue eyes, I suspect he might have had very poor eyesight. But a great subject for moi!
This is another pastel on velour paper.
It is 14" x 14" unframed.
$400 plus S/H

Queen For A Day...SOLD!..Pastel Semi - Abstract..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews
This began as a demo for Pastel Society of Southeast Texas near Houston, last Saturday. I had a great time, conducting a mini workshop after the demo, lots of eager and enthusiastic artists.
I began with my favorite abstract beginning with this one, of acrylics thrown onto the surface, let dry, then superimpose the subject over the painted marks.
It was a new technique to all who cam to the workshop and demo I think, and they did very well!
This image is unframed and is pastel on a sanded board.
9" x 24"
This image has SOLD!
Prints are available through Fine Art America:
http://fineartamerica.com/featured/queen-for-a-day-rae-andrews.html
Below are some of the workshop photos. The first shows the action with blowing the paint with a drinking straw. My demo piece was an already dried piece of sanded board that I had from home though. Not sure what I will do with the really wild colored one, but rest assured, it will become something!
