Frayssinet Doorway..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I finished this one today, guess I am all about watercolors for a while again.😏

This doorway was somewhere in the village of Frayssinet while I was there last year.
Such an idyllic little village, full of reference for the artist.

Woodland Display..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This again was a demo I just embellished. It was an exercise on color and the use of complementary opposites on the color wheel. Green on its own can be very overpowering, and although in nature we do see a lot of green, I like to 'jazz' it up with opposite colors, as with this image. The pinks and oranges help offset the green nicely.

Those Big Brown Eyes..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This gorgeous child was tough to paint for me. The beautiful dark skin tones were what I struggled with, in fact this is my second attempt.

The child is a neighbor child of a friend and originally from Africa. And yes, those eyes are as large as that !

This pastel is done on velour paper.

10" x 14" unframed
$250 plus S/H

Aussie Anzac..Pastel Portrait..Texas Artist.. Rae Andrews

I wish I had gotten this old guy's name when I took his photo many years ago.( 30 years at least)

I was teaching in the country area of Bathurst in NSW Australia.

I had a flex day during the week I was there, so I drove to the wonderful and well painted old gold mining town, of Sofala.
Characters abound here, and they are very friendly folk.

This gentleman was sitting sunning himself and rolling a cigarette, when I asked him if he would mind if I took his photo, he replied.

"She'll be right mate! I get asked that all the time" (FYI ...In Australian, this means..okay!)

So I did, and I am only just getting around to doing a serious painting of him now.Well what can I say, I've been busy!

This is a pastel on velour paper.
14" x 19.5" unframed.

$500 plus S/H Prints of this image and more of my art are available at Fine Art America:

Pink Prize...Watercolor Floral...Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This is a wet into wet watercolor I finished yesterday.

I love the challenge of no pre-drawing, just wetting the whole surface and allowing the colors to make shapes.

The difficult part is the degree of 'wetness' the artist has to govern to prevent those pesky 'blooms' which sometimes appear out of nowhere.
Of course 'pulling it altogether' is also a challenge with 'negative painting'..

I worked this whole painting in this wet into wet technique and it was great fun.

This image is a 14" x 17" unframed painting.

$150 plus S/H.

Bastrop Welcome..Landscape..Watercolor...Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I live about an hour from Bastrop which is a very charming artsy little town in central Texas.

While there a few months ago with an artist buddy, I took a lot of photos of charming houses and this reference is from one of those shots.

I embellished of course, but it's close.

This is a pure watercolor image, unframed, and is 8" x 16".

$125

Shadowed Welcome..Landscape..Watercolor...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

I have been doing so many pastels of late, I needed to get back to my watercolor painting. This is fresh of the easel.

Its a French scene (I think) ..I have so many reference photos from Europe, I can't keep track of them sometimes.

I did embellish a little though.

This is a pure watercolor on Arches paper.

It is an unframed 12" x 16" painting.
$195 plus S/H.

Shadowed Delight...Pastel... Semi-Abstract...Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I began this as a wet into wet watercolor under painting.

By now you might guess, I love shape finding, and enhancing 'intrigue'.

This image hopefully suggests layers of such 'intrigue'.

Parts of the painting are made up, other sections are from my photos taken on Maui during my last trip.

Eventually throughout the process (though) I just put the reference away and let my pastels 'do the talking' .

I hope you enjoy this image, it was a fun one to do.

Image is unframed and is on a Richeson sanded foam board.
It is 12" x 18"
$250 plus S/H

Shell Design ..Semi Abstract...Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

This is another semi abstract design done in pastels over acrylics.

I simply love this process. I never know the outcome, and these designs are always a challenge to me.

The whole surface is eventually covered in pastels in the form of pastel pencils and the soft variety sticks, after a fluid start with liquid acrylics and water.

I chose this elongated format as an added challenge, this gets me away from the 'expected' and I like the surprise .

The substrate is a white Richeson Sanded Board , which are fast becoming my favorite substrate for this mixed media work.

Netted...Abstract Watercolor and Liquid Acrylics...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

NETTED   was done a long time ago for an Australian Artist magazine article.
The article was a showcase of my art and they wanted a STEP by STEP  demonstration to take up a couple of pages.

I actually loved doing this demo, it was in watercolors and acrylics, and I used the    patterns within the image to augment MOVEMENT.

At the time I painted this, (1999) I was well into DIVISIONAL  backgrounds, as      you will see. They still work though, even today and at times, I still use that technique.

It's great to take a step back in time sometimes, and see what you were producing as an artist. In those days I lived on Maui, so most of my art had a TROPICAL  flavor .                                           .

The image size is 23.5" x 18" and it is unframed

Rhythm Of The Blues.. Liquid Acrylics and Watercolor

RHYTHM OF THE BLUES  is another mixed water media piece. I am having a ball doing these little ones, and boy oh boy, they make me think!
It's all about DESIGN  and 'feeling' the painting, rather than copying something verbatim from a reference photo.
I felt this one was very 'MUSICAL' perhaps with that shape in the upper right, it sort of looks like a guitar..Hmmm?
Either way, this one makes me want to dance!

                                                 Image size...4.25" x 10" (unframed)
                                                                  $100 Plus S/H

Earth Patterns 1...Liquid Acrylic and Watercolor

Here is a second small abstract in steps.

As with my previous image, I just tossed some liquid acrylics on the paper and manipulated some marks with my applicator bottle and a brush..

Things changed as I began to use some geometry in the image.

To block out certain areas, I used acrylic white ink, watered down. This gave my eyes some respite from the bright colors.I particularly did this in the lower right corner. After it dried, I completely changed my palette of colors to a cooler spectrum.

The darks are VERY important in these abstract designs. They help ANCHOR the eye and BALANCE the image.

In some areas I took out my original whites, and enhanced those areas with glazes of lime yellow watercolor.

I always leave a lot of whites in my first throw ins if I can, that way I have the option of getting rid of them if need be as the painting progresses.

I hope you are enjoying these challenging little abstracts.
I am...:)))
