Water Water Everywhere..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I am doing a demo today on my Dancing Brushes Zoom class and this is the subject.

I love to paint water and cascading waterfalls are usually a very exciting lesson, so here goes.

I used masking fluid for this one, using a different approach for the water and the foliage. Great fun.

This image is 12" x 16" unframed

Color Dance Over The Falls..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I love layering  with color veils. This painting evolved with no reference ..I just began veiling the colors, one over the top of the other in between drying the surface.

When I felt it was enough I dried it all, and began to draw my rocks in after which I  reinforced with  negative painting.

The waterfall was added last by using some watered down white acrylic with watercolor to color it slightly in veils and give the downward motion of falling water.
In between this water action, I added peeps of rocks .

My very last touch was white gouache to augment the foam and overflow areas of the cascading water.

I hope you like this one, it was fun to do, but made me think just the same.

I am getting ready to begin my  third  Dancing Brushes Course online next week..

This course is  two months long.
We all have  a lot of fun and I am blessed to have so many eager students.

So this painting is similar to one of the Lesson plans I have worked out for my classes.

It’s a mixture of watercolor and Liquid Acrylics. I love mixing these two mediums..

Cadenza..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I have done this image a few times before, using pastels and gouache and even another watercolor of parts of this scene.

I so rarely use masking fluid but decided to this time, not sure how I feel about the result.. I usually just free paint my water images leaving a lot of white paper showing.

Anyway, this is another way to attack this image..I hope you like it.

A Playful Balance..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This one is a demo I did in conjunction with my watercolor waterfall study I posted three posts ago, a demo on moving water, action and drama.

I did this demo the same day, in pastels on Sennelier paper.

I did not have a reference photo for this demo, and was getting the students ready for hopefully seeing a waterfall the next day, when we painted at an outdoor location.

I love to paint the action packed waterfalls, and somehow it looks better (for me) if the artist memorizes a scene and lets a little imagination play into the painting. After all the water is constantly moving, so studying it and watching how it falls will help when you paint it.

It will make the artist really concentrate on the movement of the water, storing that little personal video in the head for later use.

This pastel is on a tan colored Sennelier sanded paper, it's all pure pastel, no underpainting. I prefer my pastels to be done this way.

I hope you like this one.

Image size is 9" x 12" unframed.
$150 plus S/H

Little French Tumble..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

LITTLE FRENCH TUMBLE was one of the quick demos I did on my recent France trip and workshop.

The scene is inspired by the gorgeous area of Castelfranc, a small village not far from Le Vieux Couvent.

The demo was about moving water, which I did back in the studio after spying this scene on my walk... and I did another in watercolor of still water which  will be posted later.

I wanted the students to just play with the concept of movement, and let the watercolor make the statement. It's not always necessary to copy a scene verbatim, I like to give my impression of the scene and work a lot from memory. This painting is completely done this way.. my personal 'mind video' of what I recalled.

The way I like to portray moving water is by leaving a lot of whites as the foam. It takes practice and sometimes I do mess it up, it happens. So , my advice, never get discouraged, just take it all in your artist's stride and paint another one.. I call it BRUSH MILEAGE.. Practice makes perfect. Okay?

A Discovered Treasure..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I decided on an action packed watercolor to paint this morning. This is 'After Maui' and not really a true scene, but conjured from a feeling I will always have with me after living on one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I hope you like this one..

Majesty Sublime..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

MAJESTY SUBLIME was started yesterday as a demo for the Brenham Arts League.

What a lovely audience I had, and it was a pleasure having such an eager participation for my demonstration. Thank you all so much.

I worked more on this today just to complete the image, although I had a good start at the demo, it was just not a 'home run' quite yet.

I think it's okay now, I will live with it a day or so and see how I feel.

This image is on Sennelier sanded paper (a dark green I believe)

It is unframed and measures 19.5" x 25.5"

                                                                $525 plus S/H

Splish, Splash..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I am going through old paintings I did as demos a few years ago. It's quite cathartic to rummage through the piles.

This one was one I painted quite a while ago. I cropped it down as with the last post. Sometimes a cropped painting works way better, at least that is my hope. Once it's done, it's done.

                                                 This image is 7.5" x 13" unframed

Maui Rapids..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This watercolor is an old one, I decided to crop it down. I sometimes do that with my work, a picture within a picture. It often works way better. Try it!

Bull Creek Cascade 2..Pastel Plein Air...Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This is my second attempt on Tuesday's plein air excursion.

The wind came up and blew two sheets of my paper (not waterproof) into the creek, and Char fished them out for me, ruined of course. Oh well, the joys of plein air fun!

Luckily it was not a pastel painting already finished.

This one is 5.25" x 9.5" unframed
$65 plus S/H

Bull Creek Cascade 1..Pastel..Plein Air..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This small pastel on Sennelier paper was done on Tuesday en plein air.

It's a race against the sun while painting en plein air, as most of you already know.
That light is ever elusive, and changeable, so one has to work quickly.

Tuesday here in Austin was a glorious day, and what a great day to share with my painting buddy Char, We stumble over the rocks together searching for the best spot in which to paint. We often have to give each other a hand up or a 'boot' up, it's a scream!

I guess to onlookers, we look a bit crazy, but we sure have fun!

So.. having said that, I managed two paintings, both small, and maybe something I can work on as a bigger painting in my studio later.

I mostly do small outside paintings, to get the feel for the scene, and if I like the experience, I will often make a studio painting from these sketches.

This is 8" x 11" unframed
$95 plus S/H

Tranquility..Pastel ..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I actually did this one in 10 minutes. It was my strategy to be quick, precise and playful.

This is a great way to loosen up .

I also have been using the small formats, this one is again a 4,25" x 5,5" Sennelier sanded panel.
Ideal for a quick study.

This one is $60 plus S/H and is unframed.

Blue Haze Falls..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I am in love with unusual formats on which to paint, this long landscape support is one of my favorites.

I admit it can be tricky though. The scene is so stretched the artist has to keep in mind not to make everything explained and focused.

My falls area itself is my main area, or at least I hope it is.

I welcome comments, just be kind.Ha!

I decided to use a little pastel dusting on this image after looking at it for a couple of weeks. So here is the updated image. I stayed in the foreground with this 'DUSTING' to serve as splash and sparkle to the water.
I am learning to keep this technique to strategic areas of the painting, but I do love it!

This image is 9.6" x 25.6" and is unframed.
