Angel Eyes..Pastel...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

ANGEL EYES is a pastel I did yesterday as a demo for the Pastel Society of Southwest Texas in Grapevine, Texas. .

It was a wonderful venue and group and we had a fun workshop together..

This one was pretty quick, and is on a piece of deep tan colored Sennelier sanded paper.

Snuggled..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This pastel is done on tan velour paper. I have always loved this surface for my pastels, however, of late I have also been using suede mat board, which is fun to use with a variety of more colors.

This pastel on Sennelier paper was a fun one to play with. I have a small mini workshop coming up with a demo on pastel animals in Dallas soon so wanted to try my hand at the subject again, it's been a while.

Precious was a gorgious little diog owned by a friend of mine. She passed away a few years ago. 

I have actually done a portrait of this little baby before, but felt I wanted to try again.

Aussie Joker..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

These are my all time favorite Aussie birds, I just adore them. They cackle all the time in the treetops, and it's always what I remember the most about waking up...  their chuckles. 

Once one starts, that sets them all off. So the Aussie bushland is constantly 'LAUGHING' at you..... Very funny!

Me Too? Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Another pastel on velour paper, this one is hot off the easel.  This little dog was somewhere on my travels in Europe, and I managed to get a few great photos of him/her.

I know a lot of artists steer clear of this VELOUR surface for their pastels and  I have to admit, it takes some getting used to. 

However, the magical results of that 'buttery' pastel color on this surface always has me captivated.

Meet Penny.. She was a wonderful dog, and belonged to my dear friend Evelyn,  both of whom have passed now.

Penny is a pastel on tan velour paper. I love this 'tricky' surface for my portraits, especially animals!

As I am conducting a pastel workshop with animals as my subject in January, I thought I had best 'pastel' up on my techniques.

Topsy Turvey..Pastel...Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I saw this cat at Grandma's Coffee Shop in Ulapalakua, on Maui. It was always a favorite haunt for me, I love the outlook and who could resist the wonderful homemade cakes and salads they make there.
My art friends and I recently went there a couple of times on our trip back to Maui.

This cat was so happy and stretched out in the sun while we ate.

The odd angle is so typical of cats, and truly a challenge for me as an artist. 
Anyway, here is the finished result, a pastel on velour paper.
